CAD PROJECT – MUG

LINK TO PROJECT

Since I have only worked with TinkerCAD for my CAD experience and have never worked with OnShape, I decided to use a tutorial and choose a simpler shape for my first project. I created a mug to learn the basics of OnShape. I followed a YouTube tutorial for this project. The steps are as follows:

I started with the mug body, creating a circle and extruding it upwards. Then, I used the shell tool to make the inside of the mug. For the lip of the mug, I used the fillet tool to give it a smoother edge, rather than a sharp edge.

Next, I had to make the mug handle. I created a sketch using the spline tool to create a shape for the handle.

I then created 2 ellipses for the handle’s anchor points and used the sweep tool to create thickness for it.

While I completed the mug, there was an issue: I could not mate the handle of the mug to the mug, which is a curved surface. The assignment required me to have a mate in the project, and after spending quite a bit of time on it, it seemed impossible, therefore I resorted to creating a coaster which was mated to the mug base.

Mechanical Drawing

CAD Skills used:

  • Extruding
  • Shelling
  • Sweeping
  • Assigning Materials to Object
  • Creating BOM
  • Mechanical Drawing
  • Fastened Mate

Some challenges I faced as this was my first time using OnShape were the mechanical drawings. I had some difficulty getting some measurements and showing the dimensions on the drawing, for example: the curve of the Handle side view. This proved to be a challenge because of the nature of the curve, having no points on the sketch where the software could put a “point” to start the measurement. After strenuous searching, I could not find a solution for this issue, as Mr Crompton told me to leave it.

Good start, Noah. CAD will get easier. I promise! You’ve done some good work modelling a simple object. You’ve also done a good job of documenting your process. My only concern is that you have done demonstrated your ability to assemble parts using joins or mates. I was able to move the handle and cup independently of each other in your assembly tab. Can you create mates and actually attach the handle to the mug? Resubmit your assignment when you’re done and reply to this comment.

Getting closer, Noah. There is a join using a fasten mate, but there is now an error in that join. Can you fix? Also, please share the link to the Onshape file in your blog post so that readers can see what we’re talking about!
