For the first assignment of fusion, I was given the oppurtunity to take my first step into the CAD world. We used a world famous program called OnShape. I have absolutely zero experience with building things in CAD other than using Tinkercad, which according to Mr. Crompton is absolute bs.

To start the project I had to go through the tutorials. The tutorials were at best – questionable. The guy behind the screen spoke in monotone as the assignments were pretty difficult. Regardless, I powered through.

After completing the tutorial I wondered what I should create for the project. My project must demonstrate what I have learned (which isn’t a lot) and combine other aspects such as systems, sustainability etc. And so I’ve decided to create a trash can that can sense hand motion which then opens up. However, I have no experience with building trash cans with sensors so I decided to go to ChatGPT.

Next step was to build it, starting by sketching out the body.

Then using the extrude tool I raised the outer circle and creating a hollow body. I also included holes where the lid would get placed.

The next part was to tackle the lid of the trash can. Similar to the body, the dimensions were the same as the lid had to fit on the body.

I also added holes to extrude as part of the assembly

After extruding it I had a top lid & bottom lid structure like so. The sticks are meant to fit onto the body as a form of assembly.

The next part was a bit tricker as I had to remove a part of the lid to create a spot for my inferred sensor. It required creating an extra plane and then removing the area that I extruded.

Good post, Joshua. You have demonstrated almost all of the requirements that you are asked to. I’m confident that you can sketch and extrude as well as create a mechanical drawing that is pretty complete and includes a BOM. The one skill that you are missing is the ability to assemble the parts with some sort of join feature. I would suspect that your trash can lid would be hinged in some way so that it can open. Can you add that feature please?

For the record, I think Tinkercad is good for certain things. I just don’t think that it gives you enough power to do the things that we will need to use it for in our work.

Please reply in the comments below when you are done making your changes.

Thanks, Joshua. Your second slider assembly is a bit weird, but the first one does the job!
